The authorities of Queensland in Australia has urged people interested in trawl fishing to provide feedback on the latest round of consultation by 20 November 2009. Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries (QPIF) harvest manager Eddie Jebreen told that the trawl review was announced at the beginning of October and statewide meetings had been held.
He also said that this first stage of the review aims to identify issues stakeholders are concerned about within the East Coast Trawl Fishery. It is informed that this round of consultation closes on 20 November. It is the first step in a much longer process to update the trawl management plan, which is now 10 years old.
It is also explained that management options need to be updated in conjunction with our stakeholders to reflect the challenges faced by this industry. All stakeholders are invited to comment. Proposed changes will take into account the ecological, economic and social objectives for the fishery. Jebreen said stakeholders were also being asked to provide feedback on an industry development plan – the first for a wild catch fishery in Queensland.
