According to the Indian authority nearly 1,000 tons of fish has turned up dead in Punjab’s waters due to pollution. The authority said that it would be an understatement to say the state is not fit for pisciculture or commercial fishing. The auction for the fishing rights of Satluj near Ludhiana has been delayed because the quantity of fish in the river is too low. According to experts the reason is obviously water pollution.
Reacting upon the scientist worries the authority has taken samples from a water treatment plant on June 13 in which it was found that the water is unfit for the fish. GADVASU has submitted a report to assistant director (fisheries) which states that the water did not meet any of the standards required for carp culture. The water from the treatment plant near Kohara flows into the river.
Kanwaljit Singh Sandhu, president of Punjab Fish Farmers’ Association, told that a good amount of rainfall after a long time in the region had caused the polluted water of Buddha Nullah to reach so far causing the fish deaths at Harike. The report of the lab tess show that the alkalinity in water from the treatment plant was found to be 450 mg per litre, normal is between 60 to 300 for fish culture and hardness was found to be 292 mg per litre, normal is between 50 to 100, while salinity was 1.0 mg per litre, normal range is less than 0.05.
As per Sidhu statement the government should take necessary action to minimize the death of fish and improve the quality of waters.
