Ocean dialogue between European Commission and China

European Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Karmenu Vella, and Administrator Hong Wang of the Chinese State Oceanic Administration have taken part in the third EU-China High Level Dialogue on Ocean Affairs. They exchanged views on ocean governance, blue growth and international ocean developments.

Recognising seafood consumers as stakeholders

Fisheries consultant Ross Winstanley is planning to take part in the 8th World Recreational Fishing Conference later this year to present the idea concept of consumers as stakeholders – drawing on the decision by the government of the Australian state of Victoria to close a sustainable net fishery to replace it with a solely recreational fishery.

EU industry disappointed over vote on external fleet regulation

The European Parliament in its plenary session in Brussels voted in favour of the new proposal for a regulation on the sustainable management of external fishing fleets (COM(2015)636). The whole EU fishing industry is deeply concerned with one of the articles adopted since it could put out of business environmentally and socially responsible fishing companies on the basis of a single mistake.
