Fisheries social dimension prominent at Seafood Expo Global

During the Seafood Expo Global 2018 taking place from 24-26th of April in Brussels, gathering stakeholders from every corner of the globe, the European Commission will hold an event featuring the importance of food security and the social dimension of fisheries. According to industry body Europêche, with thousands of seafood professionals all together the event provides an ideal platform to get Europe’s message on the three sustainability dimensions of fisheries management across with thousands of seafood professionals all together.

Industry leads the way on ILO188

The UK’s fishing federations in conjunction with the MCA Fishing Safety team have together developed a Fishing Safety Management (FSM) System that will assist fishermen with the imminent implementation of a generational change to fishing safety legislation, the Work in Fishing Convention (ILO 188) aimed at creating a set of common worldwide standards for health, safety and working conditions.

Europêche vessel owners defend full respect for fishers’ social and labour rights

Europêche representatives defended and promoted full respect for the social and labour rights of all fishing vessel’s crews and demanded that the same level of compliance must be required for all countries during the Tripartite Meeting on Issues Relating to Migrant Fishers held by the International Labour Organization (ILO) during the last week in Geneva.

ARVI members support C188

A group of Spanish fishing associations that are all members of ARVI (the Vigo Fishing Shipowners’ Cooperative) have unanimously approved a code of practice that incorporates the requirements of the International Labour Organisation’s C188 Work in Fishing convention.

Commissioner meets European social partners

EU Social Partners in the fisheries sector meet Commissioner Vella to ensure strong social standards in the fishing industry. At the Plenary session held on 4th November 2016, the EU Social Partners in the fisheries sector had a positive meeting with Karmenu Vella, Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, to discuss the many pressing issues facing the fishing sector – particularly concerning safety, health and working conditions at sea.

Social Partners’ Agreement to improve working conditions presented to the Council

Almost three years after submitting the Social Partners’ Agreement (SPA) on implementing the ILO Work in Fishing Convention C188, the European Commission (EC) presented on 29 April 2016 the agreement before the Council of the EU. The European Social Partners for Fisheries, Europêche, Cogeca and the European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF), have warmly welcomed this step but regret the considerable delay with implementing the SPA that ensures a high level of protection for fishermen in all aspects of their work.
