Seafish, the authority on seafood, has announced the first successful candidate on the Royal Environmental Health Institute for Scotland’s (REHIS) new e-learning programme for Intermediate Food Hygiene. This type of training is a significant step forward for food safety training in the UK seafood industry.
The Intermediate Food Hygiene by e-learning course offers flexible and cost effective training throughout the UK. This training programme is ideal for participants at supervisor and management level training and is supported by UK-wide telephone tutor support. Successful completion of the course leads to a nationally recognized certificate.
With a longstanding successful partnership, REHIS and Seafish have worked together to develop and deliver innovative and beneficial training courses to meet the training needs of the seafood industry.
The partnership has seen the development of a joint award in HACCP training that ranges from fishermen to fish friers, and from bivalve purification to seafood smoking. A joint award in introductory food hygiene in the seafood industry is also available.
Seafish maintains a nationwide network of examination invigilators who support the hugely successful hygiene and Health & Safety open learning courses. This network ensures that the final examination can be arranged at a convenient time and venue to suit the participant.
The programme has been well piloted with 5 REHIS trainees on North Sea oil platforms, followed by 14 seafood industry trainees in Shetland, Inverness, Fraserburgh, Hull, London, Devon and Cornwall.
One of those trainees, and the first to complete his programme, is Paul Neve, a Seafish-approved trainer and fishmonger with W Morrisons Ltd. Mr Neve said: “The ability to study this when I had the time was invaluable. The more advanced food hygiene and HACCP information in the course will be of great use to me in my role as a Seafish-approved trainer.”
Colin Wallace, the President of REHIS said: “I would like to thank Seafish for their assistance in launching this new programme. The Institute and Seafish have enjoyed a very successful partnership over the years and this new initiative is a great example of how we work together to equip participants with the knowledge that will help them to operate a safe business and produce safe food.
I would like to add my congratulations to Mr Neve on successfully completing the course and being the first person in the industry to gain the qualification through e-learning.”
