The first of this season’s Atlanto-Scandian herring was landed at Vopnafjördur this morning when Faxi RE docked with 400 tonnes on board. Discharging the catch started immediately the ship was tied up at around 10AM and the fish went to HB Grandi’s processing plant to be filleted and frozen.
According to skipper Albert Sveinsson, Faxi’s herring were caught in two hauls deep north-east of Langanes Point.
‘We had a 200 tonne haul on Sunday evening. After that the herring dispersed and we spent most of yesterday searching for marks big enough to shoot on until we had a similar haul late yesterday afternoon,’ Albert Sveinsson said.
Production manager Magnús Róbertsson at HB Grandi’s Vopnafjördur plant was satisfied with the herring and not least that it was of the right quality for freezing.
‘This herring is still a bit thin, which is usual for the time of year. But the quality is right for human consumption, which is great,’ he said.
HB Grandi’s pelagic trawler Lundey NS is also on herring now and already had 200 tonnes on board last night
