It is found that the Sri Lankan fishermen often come to Indian waters for illegal fishing and slowly destroying the tuna resources of India. With the present arrest the Indian Coast Guard has arrested caught 65 Sri Lankan fishermen in the past week. These fishermen usually chose areas off the Andaman Island where patrolling is almost nil and so the Sri Lankan fishermen take the advantage of the situation and infiltrate Indian waters for illegal fishing.
The Indina Coast Guard has taken the fishermen and their boats into their custody and took them to Mandapam Coast Guard station near Rameswaram in Tamilnadu for enquiry. Although the Sri Lankan authorities have raised the matter with Tamil Nadu but the Indian authority has given no response so far. Incidents have been noticed when Sri Lankan fishermen moving towards the waters around Andaman in search of tuna fish, which is in great demand in the island nation and Maldives.
Sri Lankan Navy officials also expressed that Indian fishermen ushered their waters on a regular basis and now it has become a common occurrence. Thus the fishing activity in the sea here remained suspended following the annual 45-day ban on fishing imposed by the government in view of the breeding season.
