The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council is soliciting scientists interested in serving on its Scientific and Statistical Committee (SSC) and on a newly created Social and Economics Technical Advisory Panel (SEP). Membership on both is open to any qualified scientist, regardless of affiliation or geographic location.
The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council is one of eight regional fishery management councils in the country. Each council has an SSC responsible for reviewing the scientific basis of council management plans and actions and developing fishing level recommendations in accordance with national fisheries management guidelines. The South Atlantic Council’s SSC meets twice a year to address a broad range of topics, including stock assessments, management action evaluations, social and economic analyses, habitat evaluations, and ecosystem management issues. SSC members also play a key role in developing stock assessments for Council managed resources through participation in SEDAR, the Southeast Data, Assessment, and Review program.
The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council is also accepting applicants for a Social and Economic Technical Advisory Panel (SEP). This panel will review social and economic analyses that support Fishery Management Plans and Plan Amendments and report findings to the Scientific and Statistical Committee. The SEP will meet as needed, both in-person and via conference calls, to review FMP’s and amendments and address other social and economic issues as directed by the Council. The SEP will be chaired by an SSC member, but other members are not required to also serve on the SSC.
Anyone with expertise and experience in these areas who is interested in joining the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council’s SSC or SEP may apply by submitting a resume or CV and a cover letter highlighting qualifications. SSC applicants are also asked to also indicate receipt and acceptance of the SSC job description. Applications may be submitted by mail, fax, or email to the addresses below.
The Council will review applications at its June 8 – 12, 2009 meeting. Applications received by May 12, 2009 will be submitted for consideration.
