The new pelagic vessel for Shetland fishing company Fiskebas Fishing was christened this week at the Zamakona yard in Spain by the new ship’s godmother Mhairi Stewart.
The new Antarctic will replace Antarctic II and is now ready for sea trials before delivery and the trip home to Shetland to pick up gear and start fishing.
Antarctic’s owners opted to stay with Norwegian naval architect Skipsteknisk, who also designed their previous vessel built in 2004, for the new pelagic catcher’s design. This is the first time a Skipsteknisk-designed vessel has been built at Zamakona Shipyards in Bilbao.
The 69.60-metre, 15.20-metre beam Antarctic has accommodation for up to 14 persons on board and a strong focus during the design and build process has been on high efficiency in the Johnson Controls R717 RSW systems to ensure optimum catch quality.
