According to SFF the launch of the Marine Stewardship Council’s Scottish Fisheries Outreach Project is going to benefit the industry in a great way. Bertie Armstrong, SFF chief executive, expressed that this is welcome news for the Scottish fishing industry. The catching sector is committed to sustainability and has made a great start on certification to prove it – in April this year the Scottish fishery for north east Atlantic mackerel received its MSC accreditation.
Amrstrong opined that the announcement creates the right encouragement for different sectors of the fishing industry to achieve independent certification through the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) scheme. He added that MSC certification provides a demonstration of excellence and this is why over half of Scottish fisheries are either MSC certified or are currently in the assessment process.
Claire Pescod, MSC Scottish Fisheries Outreach Officer expressed that it is looking forward to working together with the many fishermen and stakeholders around Scotland. He said that it is important for the interested fisheries to understand MSC process by providing a dedicated point of contact and practical advice.
