Samherji aquaculture subsidiary Íslandsbleikja has expanded its facilities at Staður near Grindavík with eight new tanks.
The eight new tanks represent an additional 16,000 cubic metres added to the existing 28,000 cubic metre capacity for raising Arctic charr.
The new facility was opened formally, followed by a reception for the contractors involve din its construction and the staff and their families, with more than a hundred people taking part.
‘It’s decades since anything like this was built in Iceland for Arctic charr production,’ said Jón Kjartan Jónsson, managing director at Íslandsbleikja.
‘This was a project that was ready to get going for a long time and now it’s a pleasure to see these fine tanks that will be filled with fish in the next few months. This is the first step in expanding our capacity and supporting the growth of Arctic charr farming in Iceland.’
