Saithe processing started at Síldarvinnslan’s factory in Neskaupstaður in eastern Iceland last week.
Kaldbakur landed 115 tonnes of mixed fish at Neskaupstaður on Thursday last week, of which 20 tonnes went to the factory for processing.
According to factory foreman Jón Gunnar Sigurjónsson, saithe production bridges the gap between pelagic seasons.
‘We started processing saithe on Thursday. This is something we also did for a couple of days at the end of last year, and also in 2014. We’re hoping that the capelin fishery will get underway shortly. We concentrate on processing pelagic fish here, but when there are gaps, it’s as well to be able to switch. The saithe is filleted, trimmed and frozen, with around 25 staff working on it,’ he said.
