HB Grandi’s fresher trawler Ásbjörn RE is now back at sea after landing last Thursday and sailing at the weekend. This latest trip showed that fishing for saithe has started to improve after being scarce all year.
‘It was about time for a decent trip on saithe, and it worked out this time. We had 96 tonnes of saithe and 46-47 tonnes of redfish,’ said Ásbjörn’s skipper Fridleifur Einarsson, who explained that they were fishing on the ‘Mountains’ which are the normal fishing grounds for much of the year for HB Grandi’s fresher trawlers.
By comparison, very little saithe was caught in April and until now 30 to 35 tonnes has been a normal saithe catch for a trip.
‘The saithe are there, no question. Although the trawlers have been struggling to get saithe, the jigging boats have been fishing well, so for some reason they haven’t been catchable in a trawl.’
Two of HB Grandi’s freshers, Ásbjörn RE and Sturlaugur H Bödvarsson AK, are now at sea, while Ottó N Thorláksson RE is in port to discharge.
