Iceland’s minister of agriculture and fisheries has allocated regional quotas, under one of the two regional quota schemes.
Minister Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson has allocated the general regional quota. Along with the special quota allocated by the Icelandic Regional Development Institute (Byggðastofnun), this makes available 11,257 tonnes with 5623 tonnes allocated by the minister and 5634 tonnes by the Institute.
The announcement has been made that the Institute’s allocation has been increased by 15% and the general regional allocation by the ministry reduced by 20%.
The maximum allocated to any community is 300 (cod-equivalent) tonnes, which is this year allocated to Djúpivogur and Flateyri. Allocations are spread among 45 communities under 31 local authorities. The local authority with the largest allocation is Ísafjörður with 734 tonnes, while the Dalvík region gets 355 tonnes and Snæfellsbær has 349 tonnes.
A total of 60,000 cod-equivalent tonnes have been allocated since the 2005-06 quota year, with significant fluctuations between yearly allocations.
