Exports of Norwegian herring totalled NOK 4 billion in 2009, which is an increase of NOK 263 million or 7% compared with 2008. Also in 2009, exports of capelin for human consumption set a record of NOK 571 million, exceeding the bumper years of 2001 and 2002.
“The record high quota for Norwegian spring spawning (NSS) herring, combined with the commercial quota for capelin last year for the first time since 2003, has made these record exports possible. At the same time, the traditional markets have been purchasing large volumes of pelagic fish for human consumption,” explains senior analyst Kristin Lien from the Norwegian Seafood Export Council.
