As per the information available the New South Wales Government’s draft proposals for the Solitary Islands Marine Park Zoning Plan includes a ban on prawn trawling within two years. Grahame Turk, the fish market’s managing director, told that he will make a submission to the State Government opposing the ban.
He added that the prawn trawling ban would seriously impact on the supply of high-quality product. He said that the Coffs Harbour area not only produces terrific prawns, it also produces octopus, kingfish, snapper and so on. the main reason behind such a ban is that the fact that prawn trawling may disturb the bottom in some parts of the ocean, I don’t have a real problem with that provided it’s not destroying entire ecosystems.
According to scientists ecosystems are damaged when prawn nets are dragged over the ocean floor. Turk opined that there’s less kangaroos in George Street than there was 200 years ago, too. He told that there is a need of sustainably harvest seafood for the population.
