Organisers visit North East Scotland fishing ports.

The organisers behind the new "Scottish Skipper Expo 2011", Hugh Bonner and Sharon Boyle of "The Skipper" fishing publication, made the first of many planned trips, starting with the North East of Scotland last week to meet with the local fishing industry on their own doorstep. The trip took in the ports of Peterhead, Fraserburgh and Macduff.

Following saithe certification, UK Fisheries, DFFU and Doggerbank enter cod and haddock fisheries into MSC assessment

In the wake of the certification of its saithe fishery, UK Fisheries, DFFU and Doggerbank GmbH have entered their Arctic cod and haddock fisheries for MSC assessment. The new assessment – will also include a further saithe fishery for UK Fisheries Ltd –from the North East Arctic stocks.

More sanctions and a halt to EU accession talks required to bring resolution to mackerel dispute

Ian Gatt, chief executive of the Scottish Pelagic Fishermen’s Association, has told the Fisheries Committee of the European Parliament in Brussels today (25 January) that further sanctions must be imposed upon Iceland and their Accession talks to join the EU put on hold until there is a satisfactory resolution to the ongoing dispute over international mackerel quotas.

HB Grandi capelin quota could be 44,000 tonnes

The Marine Research Institute has recommended that the Minister of Fisheries increase the capelin quota for the season from 200,000 tonnes to 325,000 tonnes. This has been done following research into the size and distribution of the capelin stock earlier this month, now that the resulting data has been analysed. If the Minister follows the Institute’s recommendations, HB Grandi’s share of the capelin quota could be 44,000 tonnes this season.

Scottish seafood tops the menu in Lyon, France

Seafood Scotland is in Lyon, France, this week at the country’s largest foodservice show SIRHA, promoting the very best of Scottish seafood. The organisation is also supplying seafood for the fish course at the Bocuse d’Or competition, held in conjunction with SIRHA, in which 24 of the world’s greatest chefs are competing head to head to win a gold statue of the legendary Paul Bocuse.

Fish Prices/Landings for Scotland.

Slow white fish markets at Scotland premier fishing port of Peterhead reflected the fact that a number of pair trawlers in the North-east of Scotland have yet to start fishing; A total of 6089 boxes were sold at Peterhead fish market on the first two days of last week Monday & Tuesday January 17-18, where the demand for most fish selections was slightly down than the previous week.
