Fisheries: Questions and answers on the new EU fisheries control rules

The credibility of the EU's Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) depends on an effective enforcement and application of the agreed rules. With the adoption of detailed rules to apply the EU Fisheries Control Regulation, the reform of the EU’s control and enforcement policy is now complete. The new system is made up of three pillars: the Control regulation1; the IUU Regulation to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing2 (which applies to both EU and third-country vessels); and the Regulation on Fisheries Authorisations3 (which deals with the control of EU vessels fishing outside EU waters and of third country vessels fishing in EU waters). The new rules replace a system which proved to be complex, inefficient and expensive. They make the EU control and enforcement system up-to-date, more efficient and well adapted to the challenges of the 21st century. This is all the more relevant to guarantee the respect of the new set of rules that will emerge from the upcoming reform of the Common Fisheries Policy.

Failure to amend West of Scotland ‘emergency’ regulations ensures continuation of haddock discards

The failure of an attempt via the European Parliament to put an end to unworkable ‘emergency’ fisheries regulations for the West coast of Scotland highlights the urgent need for greater regional control of our fisheries, says Bertie Armstrong, chief executive of the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation.

Record exports for pelagic sector

The value of exports of pelagic fish in the first quarter of 2011 totalled NOK 2.5 billion, an increase of NOK 482 million or 24% compared to the first quarter of 2010. This is the highest value ever registered for first quarter exports of pelagic fish for human consumption. In the same period, exports of herring increased in value by 28% to NOK 1.7 billion, while mackerel exports were up by no less than 50% to a value of NOK 597 million.

Fish Prices/Landings for Scotland.

Last week Peterhead Fish Market Scotland's premier fishing port experienced the largest weeks tally for this year due to a higher than usual number of whitefish trawlers landing in a few days of each other due to the good weather conditions. One 39 metre Danish Multi- rig fishing trawler the Malle landed into Peterhead harbour last Sunday with her catch of whitefish. Haddock made £74-86 per 57kg box with whiting making £57-£91 per 57kg box and Coley making £75-£86 per 57kg box.
