With most of the pair trawlers back at sea after their refits and painting the whitefish activity is again starting to pick up at Peterhead , Scotland's premier fishing port.. At the start of the week Monday August 15 Large Haddock made £148-£165 per 57kg box and Whiting made £97-£137 per 57kg box and round Whiting made £63-£97 per 57kg box.

Copeinca (NO) – second quarter and first half year 2011 financial results

Copeinca finished successfully the first fishing season in the Centre-North zone. The allowed quota was 3.675 million tonnes, out of which the Company has 10.7% of quota. The Company processed 393,237 MT, equivalent to 13.1% from own fleet and 2.4% from third parties. Total production yield was 28.5%. Most of the catch was concentrated in the center of the country from Huacho to Pisco, as a result of the presence of juveniles in the north zone. This situation represented an extra effort for the Company due the location of its plants.

Argentine anchovy fishery gains MSC certification

The Argentinean Bonaerense anchovy (Engraulis anchoita) semi-pelagic mid-water trawl net fishery has become the first MSC certified anchovy fishery in the world. The fishery, which is located in the South West Atlantic, has been certified following independent assessment to the MSC standard for sustainable, well-managed fisheries. Products from the fishery will now be eligible to bear the blue MSC ecolabel.

Deep sea species and ecosystems: worth saving?

For the first time ever, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will conduct an open review of national and regional actions to protect deep-sea species and ecosystems– beyond national jurisdiction– from the harmful impacts of bottom fishing. This open review is scheduled to take place at UN headquarters in New York, on 15-16 September, 2011.
