Faxi RE was due to dock in Vopnafjördur at 1900 tonight with 700 tonnes of herring on board, all caught in a single shot in Breidafjördur. This is Faxi’s second trip on herring after the domestic summer-spawning herring fishery opened. The first trip was also a 700 tonnes, but taken in two shots.
The fishing cooperative Küstenfischer Nord eG Heiligenhafen has received the internationally recognised MSC certificate for sustainable fishing for its eastern Baltic cod. Ulrich Elsner, an executive member of the managing board of Küstenfischer Nord eG Heiligenhafen, is delighted with the result: “Our fishery was put through its paces over a 14-month period – and was successful. The independent certifying body Food Certification International and a team of scientific experts confirmed that our fishery meets the requirements of the MSC standard”. The cooperative’s members can start using the MSC label on their eastern Baltic cod immediately. The label tells consumers that the fish was caught using eco-friendly methods.

The European Commission today presented its proposal for fishing opportunities, for 2012, for fish stocks managed together with third countries such as Norway or through Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs) across the world's oceans.
The Agriculture & Fisheries Council will meet in Brussels on Monday 14 November (starting at 10.00 am). It will be chaired by Mr Marek Sawicki, Polish Minister for Agriculture & Rural Development. Commissioners Maria Damanaki, John Dalli and Dacian Ciolo#1; will represent the Commission. The Fisheries and Health issues will be dealt with in the morning, and the remaining Agriculture points will be treated in the afternoon. Over lunch, the Presidency has asked for Ministers to have a discussion on the "greening" of CAP direct payments. Press conferences are scheduled for 12.30 with Commissioner Damanaki, and for 18.00 with Commissioner Ciolos.
The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) is holding its 22nd Regular Meeting in Istanbul from 11 to 19 of November 2011. In this annual meeting, the European Union and other ICCAT Contracting Parties will agree on management and control measures for the sustainable protection of tuna and tuna-like species in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. These measures will be based on scientific advice released on 17 October 2011 and will include the setting of Total Allowable Catches (TACs) where recommended by the ICCAT scientific committee, e.g. for bigeye tuna, and North and South Atlantic albacore.

Over 100 exhibitors will once again be displaying their products and services to fishermen at next year’s show. Visitor numbers in 2011 reached in excess of 5,000 visitors from Ireland, Scotland, The Shetlands, Orkney, Chanel Islands, Isle of Man, Sweden, France, Australia.
