The Chile squat lobsters and nylon (nailon) shrimp modified trawl fishery has entered into independent, third-party assessment in the Marine Stewardship Council’s (MSC) certification program. The fishery targets the following three species: yellow squat lobster (Cervimunida johni), red squat lobster (Pleuroncodes monodon) and nylon shrimp (Heterocarpus reedi). The assessment will evaluate the fishery against the MSC’s rigorous principles and criteria for sustainable fishing and, if successful, crustaceans from this fishery will be eligible to bear the MSC ecolabel recognizing seafood from well-managed and sustainable sources.
A helicopter rescued four fishermen from a liferaft, after their 18 metre fishing vessel ‘Rachel Jayne III’ began to sink. They where taken to the Wansbeck Hospital where they were met by the Newbiggin Coastguard Rescue Team which gave them medical treatment.
