NFFO secures government support for storm hit fishermen

The National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations (NFFO) has welcomed confirmation by Fisheries Minister, George Eustice, that fishermen affected by the recent extreme weather will have access to the government’s storm relief fund, but says much more needs to be done to support the sector as one of the worst hit industries.

Coastal State consultations on mackerel in the North-East Atlantic in Bergen

A further round of Coastal State consultations on mackerel sharing in the North-East Atlantic was held in Bergen on 28 to 31 January 2014. Despite all conditions being there for the Parties (European Union, Faroe Islands, Iceland and Norway) to reach a fair and balanced agreement on sharing the mackerel stock, a great opportunity to do so has not yet been seized.

Chile squat lobsters and nylon shrimp fishery enters MSC

The Chile squat lobsters and nylon (nailon) shrimp modified trawl fishery has entered into independent, third-party assessment in the Marine Stewardship Council’s (MSC) certification program. The fishery targets the following three species: yellow squat lobster (Cervimunida johni), red squat lobster (Pleuroncodes monodon) and nylon shrimp (Heterocarpus reedi). The assessment will evaluate the fishery against the MSC’s rigorous principles and criteria for sustainable fishing and, if successful, crustaceans from this fishery will be eligible to bear the MSC ecolabel recognizing seafood from well-managed and sustainable sources.
