In August the exports of Norwegian salmon totalled NOK 1.9 billion, an increase of NOK 529 million or 39 percent compared to the same month last year. It is said that the volume of exports surged by no less than 14,600 tonnes (round weight) or 29 percent. The export price for fresh Norwegian salmon in August was NOK 30.29 per kilo. This is NOK 6.43 lower than the average price during the previous month.
Paul Aandahl from the Norwegian Seafood Export Council, opined that the main reason for the fall in the price of Norwegian salmon is the strong growth in volume. He also said that volume in the last week of August was a massive 41 percent up compared to the same week last year.
It is observed that USA will become an important Norwegian salmon export market in near future as in August, the volume of Norwegian salmon exports to the USA was 3,600 tonnes (round weight). This is an increase of 3,000 tonnes, up fivefold compared to the same month last year. This is primarily attributable to growth in exports of fresh Norwegian salmon fillets. In August, the USA was the 6th biggest market for Norwegian salmon.
Norwegian Fjord Trout also made a strong showing in August with exports for the month totalling NOK 153 million, an increase of 17 percent. However, the volume of exports showed a decline of 800 tonnes or 13 percent.
