Norwegian herring exports for April are up compared to the same period last year, with values slightly down, while both values and volumes for mackerel have fallen – but the market in south Korea is showing a keen interest in mackerel form Norway.
Herring exports in April were 103,000 tonnes, up 21% compared to the same period last year, but with a value down by 8% to NoK896 million. Primary markets for herring during the first part of the year have been Germany, Poland and Lithuania.
So far this year, 61,000 tonnes of mackerel have been exported, with a value of NoK778 million. So volumes have dropped by 21% and values by 18%. Key mackerel markets for the first part of 2018 are Turkey, South Korea and China.
‘Norwegian mackerel continues to increase in popularity in South Korea, and is gaining a srong position. South Korea is the largest growth market for mackerel, and has imported 2000 tonnes this year more compared to the same period last year,’ said the Norwegian Seafood Council’s representative in South Korea, Gunvar L Wie.
