British Petroleum’s “Deepwater Horizon” drilling rig spill has been spreading like wild forest in the Gulf of Mexico. New report says that the location was about 50 miles south of the Mississippi River Delta in the several miles deep waters of the Gulf. Areas of the Gulf of Mexico affected by contaminating oil were earlier closed to fishing. The area boundaries have now been revised.
NOAA has restricted fishing to both recreational and commercial fishing in the affected area but transit through the area is still allowed. The fishing ban applies to both “catch and keep” and “catch and release.” Because of the difficulty in accurately mapping the exact oil spill and contamination area, NOAA strongly advises that those who fish in areas beyond the mapped boundaries of the no-fishing zone to not fish where oil or oil sheens are present.
