The MEST Shipyard in the Faroe Islands has contracted to build catamarans for aquaculture company Bakkafrost, with the first to be delivered in January 2017.
The requirement is for catamarans that are capable of operating under difficult Faroese winter conditions – coping with high wave heights and strong winds. Designed as service craft for Bakkafrost’s extensive aquaculture operations, there is an option in the contract for further vessels.
Two of the Bakkafrost catamarans are 15 metre overall by 8 metre beam vessels, and a third smaller vessel measures 14 metre overall with a 6 metre beam.
MEST managing director Mouritz Mohr said that he is delighted with the Bakkafrost contract, not least because the buyer has decided to go to a local company to build the steel-hulled boats with aluminium superstructure. The catamarans will each be fitted with twin 450hp engines and deck cranes with a 14 metre reach.
