The small-scale marine finfish hatcheries are taking interest in setting up new technology to produce more fingerlings for aquaculture. This new technology is cost effective and even the poor people can use in developing countries. Setting up small-scale hatcheries under this new technology would have low capital costs and the profitability of these ventures ensures rapid payback of capital investment.
There is new guide that provides an outline of the requirements to establish a small-scale marine finfish hatchery, particularly the economic aspects. The guide has some basic technical information in order to give an indication of the level of technical expertise necessary to operate a small-scale marine finfish hatchery. The Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific has published this guide saying it is not intended as a detailed technical guide to the operation of small-scale hatcheries.
The publisher said that the guide contains additional resources, such as training courses in marine finfish hatchery production and the likes. According to the guide the development of small-scale hatcheries may be more appropriate where there are existing marine hatchery operations, such as for shrimp or milkfish. There are many information regarding the establishment of hatchery and different techniques to improve the productions.
There is no denying fact that this guide has made a major contribution to improving the sustainability of marine finfish aquaculture by improving hatchery production of high-value species, particularly groupers.
