The MSC has launched a new online search tool which allows suppliers of sustainable seafood to be easily found and contacted. The search is at http://cert.msc.org/supplierdirectory.
Aimed primarily at retailers, restaurants, and businesses in the seafood supply chain the new tool searches a database of nearly 1,000 companies around the world that can supply MSC certified seafood. These businesses are from all points of the seafood supply chain and are certified to supply seafood from fisheries that meet the MSC standard.
Buyers looking for sustainable seafood or wishing to apply for a license to sell products with the MSC ecolabel can use the new online search tool as a first stop to find suppliers that can meet their needs.
Searches can be filtered using a number of different criteria, including location, species, fishery and various product categories. With increased demand for certified sustainable seafood the search will help meet the needs of a growing number of businesses in the marketplace looking for sustainable seafood.
MSC Chain of Custody is the traceability element of the MSC program. It ensures MSC-labelled seafood can be tracked through the supply chain and provides a vital assurance for buyers seeking MSC-certified seafood. When a product is sold with the MSC ecolabel, each business in the supply chain must have a Chain of Custody certificate, showing they have demonstrated to independent auditors that MSC certified fish is kept separate from non MSC-certified fish. This means that consumers and buyers can rest assured that all seafood showing the MSC logo has been sourced from sustainable fisheries.
There are currently nearly 1,000 Chain of Custody certified businesses around the world offering certified sustainable seafood from 48 certified fisheries around the world. Worldwide there are over 2,400 MSC-labelled products on sale in nearly 50 countries.
Any Chain of Custody certificate holders with comments on their listing in the search should email comments to supplierdetails@msc.org. Please note that some details have to be verified by certifiers before they can be updated online.
