Hampiðjan subsidiary Fjarðarnet’s new net loft is taking shape rapidly at Neskaupstaður in the east of Iceland.
The new building is being erected on reclaimed land near the Síldarvinnslan fishmeal plant and the completion of the new 85 metre building is expected to be a highly positive development for Fjarðarnet when it is finished in March next year.
The new net loft measures 2600 square metres and part of the construction is two floors. It replaces the company’s existing premises which were built in 1965.
‘Fishing vessels and fishing gears have grown in recent years and this development calls for better facilities,’ said Fjarðarnet’s managing director Jón Einar Marteinsson
‘Alongside this, the company puts a great deal of emphasis on developing new and better fishing gears, and the new building will provide better facilities for this work.’
Part of the new building will be used as a gear store for purse seines and in future it will be possible for all fishing gears to be stored under cover.
‘This will be a huge change compared to what we are used to,’ he said, adding that as well as constructing and repairing fishing gear, Fjarðarnet also operates a liferaft servicing department and provides services to aquaculture companies.
