Ice Trawl Greenland’s new fishing vessel Nataarnaq, which will replace an older trawler of the same name, has been launched at the Astilleros de Murueta shipyard in Bilbao.
According to Ove Rosing Olsen, chairman of the Ice Trawl Greenland board, the new trawler’s construction has been delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic, and the projected completion is now August 2021.
‘Because of the coronavirus situation, the launch took place without the board being present. The construction is being overseen by Nataarnaq’s chief engineer Asbjørn Petersen,’ he said.
‘Ice Trawl Greenland has its 30-year anniversary in 2021. The Board of Directors is very satisfied with the company’s results during these years and happy that it can be marked with the new very beautiful and modern shrimp trawler.’
He added that Nataarnaq will be christened when it arrives in Sisimiut in the autumn of next year.
Designed by Skipsteknisk, the 82.30 metre LOA, 18 metre breadth Nataarnaq is being built to an ST-119 design. It will have accommodation for a crew of 30 in 28 single and one double cabin. The refrigerated fishroom is on two levels and it will have a 2950 cubic metre capacity.
It will operate exclusively on shrimp, working on the same fishing pattern as the current Nataarnaq which works in Greenlandic waters, as well as fishing around Svalbard.
