A fish warehouse for 20 million danish crowns with its own ice factory was inaugurated on a bright sunshiny spring day at the landing facility at Thorupstrand in northwestern Jutland.
The initiators of Thorupstrand Coastal Fishermen’s Guild spared no expenses in the construction of a fish warehouse on the foreshore of Jammerbugt bay, one of Denmark’s last major coastal landing sites for ocean-going boats that still land on the open beach.
Matching the fish that’s landed on Thorupstrand, which is caught both gently and sustainably and has a very high quality, the developers behind the project did not compromise in the choice of architects, materials or equipment used for the project.
The fish warehouse is designed by Brøgger Architects (KRF Arkitekterne). They have in their choice of materials as well as the fishermans guilds sure eye for quality and reliability chosen an ice factory for the warehouse that both economically and security wise meets the customers demands for a functional fishmonger at Thorupstrand. Therefore, the system also operated by solar energy.
Ice factory
To meet customer expectations for superior quality, an ice factory with a NH3 cooling group from Hvide Sande Skibssmedie A/S was chosen. The supplier from Hvide Sande has specialized in the construction of ice plants, tailored to the environment they work in. The system is optimized for the fishing industry, which in Thorupstrand means environmentally friendly fishery from light Seaboats fishing with Danish seines or fixed gillnets in the plentiful Skagerrak waters. The boats must therefore have easy and flexible code access to ice before they take to the sea – around the clock.
The Thorupstrand Landingsplads Pakhusforening (Thorupstrand landing place Warehouse Association) which was formed from the two associations Han Herrede Havbåde and Thorupstrand Fiskeriforening (Thorupstrand Fishermen’s Association) already produced more than 140 tonnes of flake ice. The reliable plants is monitored by Hvide Sande Skibssmedies online service for the first year, which gives complete control over the process and the possibility to quickly step in if need be.
To ensure optimal distribution of fish in an unbroken cold chain from boat to refrigerated vehicle, Thorupstrand Landingsplads Pakhusforening has built a warehouse, where it is possible to process, store and package freshly caught fish under optimal conditions so that it can reach the consumer within 24 hours after being caught.
The project is supported by Realdania, Maersk Fund and NaturErhvervstyrelsen (Danish Nature and Business Authority).
