Protection of seas and the sustainable harvesting of fish and shellfish has become so important for the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation that they produce a new Environmental Policy Statement that underlines its core guiding principles for environmental responsibility. This Environmental Policy Statement has brought the SFF’s environmental policy right up to date by taking into account recent changes and initiatives in fisheries management.
Rory Campbell, Fisheries Policy Officer for the SFF, said that the main purpose of this policy document is to demonstrate, to as wide an audience as possible, that the Federation and its members are serious about sustainability and environmental protection. He admits that Scotland has some of the world’s best fishing grounds and to recognise that the key to its future lies in the health of these stocks and the ecosystem that sustains them.
As per Campbell this new and updated Environmental Policy Statement signals Scottish determination to play a full and active role in ensuring healthy and sustainable seas for future generations of Scottish fishermen. He added, “Our Environmental Policy Statement is a guide to what our members in the various sectors of the industry are doing to address issues of sustainability.”
