Lüderitz has welcomed the first brand new build deep sea trawler since Namibia’s Independence.
Lalandii 1 represents a 160 million Namibian dollar investment by the Lüderitz-based fishing company, Lalandii Holdings. The new trawler’s role is to supply the value-added factory in Lüderitz where 300 of Lalandii Holdings’ people manufacture Pescanova’s seafood products.
This investment is part of the NovaNam-Lalandii strategic plan, which committed to a N$480 million investment programme for three brand new build vessels between 2019 and 2020. Investment in the other two new trawlers comes from Lalandii’s associated company,NovaNam, which is putting N$320 million into them.
According to parent company Nueva Pescanova, the construction and operation of these new fishing vessels meets 10 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. With this investment, Lalandii Holdings assists Namibia to stake and enhance its claim locally, regionally and internationally as an active promoter of these goals, as well as contributing towards the FAO’s Blue Growth initiative.
Lalandii 1 is fitted out with innovative systems for efficient, low-consumption operation and minimised carbon footprint. Crew conditions were a primary factor during the design and construction process, and conditions comply with International Labour Organisation’s Convention 188.
