The press communiqué of MSC states that Will Martin, Chairman of the Marine Stewardship Council Board of Trustees, welcomed eight newly appointed members of the Stakeholder Council. He said that the new members bring a wide and diverse range of experience, skills and knowledge to their role of advising the MSC, and ensuring that the views of groups with direct interests in the sustainable seafood arena and the MSC are heard.
On September 29-30 the Council will hold a two-day meeting in Washington DC and will discuss a variety of issues, such as the current consultations on policy with the MSC. The MSC Stakeholder Council was created to provide strategic and policy-related advice to MSC’s Board on the MSC standard, the MSC Strategic Plan, and a wide range of organisational priorities and related issues.
The new members are: John Goodlad, from Scottish fishing industry; Tom Grasso, has over 20 years experience of leading conservation and sustainable development programs in coastal West Africa, southeast Asia, Europe and the Pacific; Kevin Hackwell, a trained ecologist; Martin Hall, has been the chief scientist and head of the tuna-dolphin program of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) for the past 25 years; Patricia Majluf, founder and current director of the Center for Environmental Sustainability (CSA) of the UPCH; Sian Morgan, a marine ecologist with particular research and policy interests in promoting change in international markets for marine products; Yorgos Stratoudakis, specialises in fisheries science, and heads the Fisheries Resources and Sustainability Research Unit of the National Research Institute for Agriculture and Fishery (IPIMAR) in Portugal; Niels Wichmann, managing director, Danish Fishermen’s Association and Danish Fishermen’s Producer Organisation.
