The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Morocco signed an agreement at the Halieutis exhibition on Friday, aiming to build capacity in Morocco’s artisanal fisheries.
The FAO-Morocco Convention was signed by Morocco’s Secretary General of Maritime Fisheries Zakia Driouich and the FAO representative in Morocco, Florence Rolle, at a side event held during last week’s Halieutis event in Agadir.
The intention of the convention is to strengthen the role of the professional organisations in the artisanal fisheries sector and to contribute to the improvement of their technical and management capacities, in particular concerning responsible fisheries.
The artisanal fisheries sector in Morocco employs more than 40,000 people and the sector has an approximately €187 million annual turnover.
