According to Minister Diane Finley the ministry of fisheries and oceans is expected to invest nearly $1.8 million in the makeover of the outer east pier at the commercial fishing harbour facility in Port Dover. Finley said that the government understands the importance of harbours to Canada’s fish harvesters and communities and so there is a $10 million commitment in Budget 2008 for harbour repairs and environmental cleanup at harbours.
Finley states that these repairs will allow continued safe access by commercial fish harvesters and other users for years to come. The Port Dover commercial fishing harbour facility is located at the mouth of the Lynn River. It consists of two river entrance structures, a commercial harbour basin and wharves. The authority decided to encapsulate the existing outer east pier with steel sheet piling and to install a new concrete deck.
The project has been tendered by Public Works and Government Services Canada and the project was awarded to Dean Construction Company Limited. It is said that the work began in mid-January and will be completed by this summer. The close cooperation of different authorities enables the federal government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fishing.
