In coastal Georgia commercial shad fishing season is going on and fisheries officials have appealed to the fishers to follow rules of safety strictly. Officially, commercial shad season opened Jan. 1 and will conclude March 31. Law enforcement officials with the state Department of Natural Resources respond to reports of anglers falling overboard, which often results in serious injury or death during each season.
Sgt. Chris Hodge said that but now it is expected that fishermen will listen to the department’s warning and take extra safety precautions. He urged the fishermen to wear life jacket while fishing, it can save their life. Hodge is urging fishermen to follow net requirements to ensure equipment is in accordance with legal limits.
Hodge also said that in recent times the commercial shad industry shrink, likely due to increases in fuel prices, as well as a lack of demand for the fish. He added that people should make sure to comply with the laws and regulations. The Satilla and the St. Marys rivers will not be open for commercial shad fishing this year.
