According to SCS very soon Louisiana blue crab fishery would be labeled with MSC certificate. Initially SCS seeks to open a dialogue with all organisations or individuals with a direct interest in the fishery. SCS has invited public comments to the assessment process (relevant to the status of the stock, ecosystem interactions or fishery management practices).
The location of the fishery is the State Waters of Louisiana in FAO statistical area 31 and the method used in this fishery is traps. The fishery is managed by the state of Louisiana through its Wildlife and Fisheries Commission, Department of Wildlife & Fisheries, Division of Marine Fisheries in active consultation with an industry group, the Louisiana Blue Crab Task Force.
The main commercial market of this fishery product is domestic one. SCS told that the assessment process is expected to take 13 months and is scheduled for completion around June 2011.
