Local fishermen in Hopedale are getting help in trying time charities donate to out-of-work fishermen. Due to sudden closure of commercial fishing from Louisiana to Florida, and thousands of fishermen are out of work. Fishermen, their wives and children in St. Bernard Parish lined up for food and other assistance in Hopedale.
Joseph Alfonso is a life-long commercial fisherman, said that he fish the small inlet, and there’s no oil, no sign of oil. He added that the waters off St. Bernard Parish are full of fish that commercial fisherman aren’t allowed to catch. If they can’t catch the fish, they can’t make money, and their families can’t eat.
Government has planned to provide food and other assistance to those fishermen families who are badly affected. Leslie Dole, of Second Harvest Food Banks, informed that Second Harvest is working with Catholic Charities of New Orleans (and) the Department of Social Services at the state level to make sure that they are mobilizing the food sources and the water resources we need to be able to provide ongoing food assistance. The commercial fishermen received clothes for children, food and gift cards for food from Winn-Dixie.
