A news report states that the waters of Organce County now has large numbers of feisty, slippery, ink-squirting Humboldt squid and anglers off Newport Beach are wrestling them into boats. It is reported that the influx of huge number of squid started Friday. Anglers aboard the Western Pride out of Balboa Peninsula caught 225 of them.
It is informed that the largest fish weighed 60 pounds (they can get up to 100 pounds). Chris Cunningham, manager of Davey’s Locker Sportfishing, said the catch could be a one day thing. Humboldt squid — which are also called jumbos — are a here today, gone tomorrow creature. It is said that such an influx has given the local sportfishing business an unexpected and welcome boost.
Cunningham explained that this is usually the slowest time of the year for us. And the squid have come at the perfect time. If this happened during the summer or spring, the squid would go after the sand bass and barracuda. He further told that the phone didn’t stop ringing people are asking us which boat will have the smallest number of people, so they have room to catch them.
