Defra has authorised temporary closure of the English whitefish fishery (TR1) in the North Sea from 25 January. The closure will last until 31 January, and is in response to concerns about the UK fleet exceeding its annual allocation of days at sea.
On Saturday evening 23rd January 2010 Fenit RNLI lifeboat launched at 7.45pm to recover an injured fisherman from a Dutch registered trawler 100 miles west of Loop Head in Co Clare. A medical emergency so far from shore would normally require the Irish Coast Guard helicopter to launch but a heavy fog made it impossible for them to launch. Shannon Coast Guard requested the RNLI lifeboat in Fenit to launch to the aid of the injured fisherman.
