Spanish consumers now have access to more certified sustainable hake now that the entire Puerto de Celeiro fleet has completed Friend of the Sea certification, and has been audited by accredited independent bodies. Puerto de Celeiro provides around 30% of the hake consumed in Spain.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment (MAPAMA) has imposed fines of more than €8 million as a result of the Operation Sparrow 2 investigation, targeting both companies and individuals. As well as the fines, further penalties are prohibitions on involvement in fisheries and on receiving subsidies or state aid.
Spanish-based fishing group Nuevo Pescanova has embarked on a construction programme for seven new fishing vessels that are scheduled to renew part of its fleets fishing in Namibia and Mozambique.
It’s all about electricity for Naust Marine, based in Iceland, which put all its efforts in to developing electrical winch systems back when hydraulics were king. It turned out that they were right to put their faith in electrical systems, now that virtually every winch manufacturer is moving in this direction.
The Spanish tuna fleet will invest €3 million this year in its Fishery Improvement Project developed in conjunction with WWF. This brings the level of investment to the FIP, launched in 2017, to a total of €12 million. The objective is to achieve MSC certification for all of its catches by 2021.
A Platform Support Vessel that was sold more than a year ago to an unnamed buyer has now been delivered to Zamakona Yards in Pasajes. Once it has been converted for its new role, owners Luntos Co Ltd plan to operate the vessel as a crab catcher with capacity to work as a floating processor for pelagic species.
Less than a year after its inception, the Vigo-based innovation hub Fishing Accelerator has demonstrated the results of projects developed with Pescapuerta, Orpagu, Mascato and Opromar, using the Conxemar exhibition to showcase its work. Between them, these partners are responsible for around a hundred fishing vessels, a processing capacity of around 35,000 tonnes and approximately 110,000 tonnes of seafood sold in more than 80 countries.
The Spanish tuna fishing fleet remains one of the most receptive and active worldwide in adopting International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF) best practices for mitigating by-catches, a commitment reflected in the Spanish fleet’s high attendance at these workshops each year and as stated in an ISSF Technical Report.
The Zamakona Shipyard has contracted to deliver a new tuna purse seiner to Bermeo company Echebastar, increasing the size of its distant water freezer purse seiner fleet to six vessels.
Sustainability and the fight against IUU fishing are today’s buzzwords, in distant waters such as as Equatorial Guinea, the Cook Islands and the Seychelles, where the Spanish tuna fleet operates, keeping track of vessel activity in real time has been boosted. The Organisation of Associated Producers of Large Freezer Tuna Vessels (OPAGAC) in conjunction with Satlink, recently presented the technology used on board their vessels at the headquarters of the Permanent Representation of Spain (REPER) in Brussels.
