Spanish fleet’s tuna FIP enters second year

The Spanish tuna fleet will invest €3 million this year in its Fishery Improvement Project developed in conjunction with WWF. This brings the level of investment to the FIP, launched in 2017, to a total of €12 million. The objective is to achieve MSC certification for all of its catches by 2021.

A Platform Support Vessel that was sold more than a year ago to an unnamed buyer has now been delivered to Zamakona Yards in Pasajes. Once it has been converted for its new role, owners Luntos Co Ltd plan to operate the vessel as a crab catcher with capacity to work as a floating processor for pelagic species.

Fishing Accelerator presents technology results

Less than a year after its inception, the Vigo-based innovation hub Fishing Accelerator has demonstrated the results of projects developed with Pescapuerta, Orpagu, Mascato and Opromar, using the Conxemar exhibition to showcase its work. Between them, these partners are responsible for around a hundred fishing vessels, a processing capacity of around 35,000 tonnes and approximately 110,000 tonnes of seafood sold in more than 80 countries.

Tuna sustainability and IUU

Sustainability and the fight against IUU fishing are today’s buzzwords, in distant waters such as as Equatorial Guinea, the Cook Islands and the Seychelles, where the Spanish tuna fleet operates, keeping track of vessel activity in real time has been boosted. The Organisation of Associated Producers of Large Freezer Tuna Vessels (OPAGAC) in conjunction with Satlink, recently presented the technology used on board their vessels at the headquarters of the Permanent Representation of Spain (REPER) in Brussels.

The Nodosa Shipyard at Marín north-western Spain has delivered a combination flyshooter/twin-rigger to Ospey Trawlers. Henk Senior has completed sea trials prior to delivery and will fish in the English Channel and North Sea.
