Scientists have used some surprising and ingenious methods to get Greenshell mussels to breed in captivity and their efforts could soon be worth $200 million a year to the New Zealand economy.

The 24 metre trawler was built in Nelson by the Aimex Service Group, which has for many years also been the Rapp Marine agent for New Zealand and Australia.

Volker Kuntzsch of New Zealand company Sanford has made a robust response to the University of British Columbia report, Reconstruction of Marine Fisheries Catches for New Zealand (1950-2010), which uses historical catch information from New Zealand fisheries and claims these are 2.7 (between 1950 and 2010) times larger than the official records.
