The Dutch Oyster Association has started its assessment against the internationally recognised MSC standard for sustainable fishing. If successful, their two fisheries will be able to display the MSC ecolabel on their products.
The two species targeted, Native Oyster (Ostrea edulis) and Pacific Oyster (Crassostrea gigas) will be assessed at the same time. Both fisheries rely on enhancement of oyster stocks – a Catch and Grow (CAG) system.
The Producers’ Organisation of the Dutch Fishermen’s Association (DFA) razor clam fishery has entered full assessment for Marine Stewardship Council certification. If successful, the fishery will be able to display the MSC eco-label on its products. The DFA razor clam fishery will be the first fishery to be assessed against MSC’s policy guidelines for introduced species.
The assessment will be part-funded by a certification grant from the Dutch Ministry of Economics, Agriculture and Innovation, as part of the government’s ongoing commitment to supporting Dutch fisheries seeking certification.

The Dutch Producers’ Organisation Mussel Culture (in Dutch: PO Mosselcultuur) celebrate the 2011 mussel season with a special achievement: the fishery has been awarded MSC certification following an independent assessment against the MSC standard for sustainable fisheries. Mussels from this fishery may now bear the blue MSC ecolabel, which gives customers assurance that the product is traceable to a certified sustainable source.
Friend of the Sea announces the certification of Dover sole (Solea solea), Plaice (Pleuronectes platessa), Turbot (Psetta maxima), Brill (Scopthalmus rhombus) and Dab (Limanda limanda) from Noordzee Vissers Consortium III.
“Zeeuwse mosselen” – mussels from the Dutch province of Zeeland, a very popular and typical Dutch specialty seafood product – are now eligible to bear the MSC ecolabel: The Dutch Association of Suspended Culture Mussel Farmers (in Dutch: Zeeuwse Hangcultuurkwekers) has been certified to the Marine Stewardship Council standard for sustainable and well-managed fisheries. The association has been working towards MSC certification for almost one and a half years. The assessment was carried out by independent certifier SGS Nederland B.V.
