Frozen capelin shipped out at Vopnafjördur
So far this year 2800 tonnes of capelin have been frozen at HB Grandi’s pelagic processing plant in Vopnafjördur. The market for this is in several eastern European countries and this week 1800 tonnes of frozen capelin products were shipped onto a reefer vessel.

Akranes ready for capelin
Ingunn AK is now steaming to Akranes with a full load of around 2000 tonnes of capelin on board, and is expected to dock tonight, after which fishmeal production can start. This is the first landing of capelin to Akranes this season, with the last landings at the end of last year’s season in March.

Capelin fishing looking good
This year’s capelin fishing started well with a 900 tonne first landing at Vopnafjördur last Thursday by Lundey NS. This was followed by Faxi RE and Ingunn AK between them delivering a further 2500 tonnes, with an 1100 tonne second landing by Lundey now being discharged.

The sea teeming with life
‘We’ve been on the Hali grounds the last few days and conditions here are excellent. There is a lot of capelin here, so the fish is in good condition and unusually big. For example, the saithe we had the other day were that big that we had to hand fillet around half of it that was too big for the filleting machines,’ said Trausti Egilsson, skipper of HB Grandi’s factory trawler Örfirisey RE, although when we spoke to him, the ship was heading for a lee in the Ísafjördur Deep to sit out a storm

No agreement was reached on the allocation of quotas in mackerel fisheries in the Northeast-Atlantic next year at a meeting of the four coastal States, Iceland, the EU, Norway and the Faroe Islands which was held in Clonakilty, Ireland, from 6-9 December. Russia attended the meeting as an observer.

Slow search for capelin
Not a great deal of capelin has been found on fishing grounds off the Westfjords after research vessel Árni Fridriksson yesterday reported some decent marks of large capelin there. Five or six pelagic vessels are now in the area and with poor weather forecast, it seems likely that the search will be brought to a close after this evening.

Herring season looks like being over
Lundey NS was scheduled to dock this morning in Vopnafjördur with 850 tonnes of herring on board, all caught on Sunday in a single shot in Breidasund, just inside Stykkishólmur. This means that HB Grandi’s quota for Icelandic summer spawning herring for the year has been caught now that the company fleet has taken 5000 tonnes. This also means that the herring fishery comes to an end for the moment.
