The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, and Member of Parliament for Central Nova, on behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, has announced that the Canadian Government is ready to invest $12 million for repair and improvement projects at small craft harbours in communities throughout Nova Scotia.
Minister MacKay also said that Canadian Government knows that functional and accessible small craft harbours are essential to the economic prosperity of many fishing communities in Nova Scotia. These kind of investment ensures that those who rely on the fishery can count on improved harbours for years to come, opined MacKay.
It is no denying fact that the government is spending across Canada and among them the Small Craft Harbours Program is investing $67 million as part of its regular program to revitalize small craft harbours. Today’s investment is in addition to the funding provided by Canada’s Economic Action Plan, which provides $200 million for two years for harbour repairs and maintenance projects. These projects were announced in 2009, and work will continue until March 2011. Small craft harbour repair and improvement projects are undertaken by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, as part of its Small Craft Harbours Program, in cooperation with the local harbour authorities that manage and operate facilities for local users.
