India firm to secure fishing subsidies through WTO rules because it does not want that any useless restrictions, confirmed Jayant Dasgupta, Joint Secretary in the Department of Commerce. He explained that the WTO rules should not prevent India from providing financial help to encourage fishing in Exclusive Economic Zone because India’s bright future.

He says the proposed WTO rules on fishing subsidies threatened to cut the ability of India and other developing nations to provide support and encourage fishing in their EEZ. Ajay Bhattacharya, Joint Secretary, Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, said that the new rules on fishing subsidies is not going to adversely affect the fishermen’s livelihood and nutritional concerns.
The stakeholders are more concern on the proposed fisheries management regimes. Commenting on that Abhijit Das, Deputy Project Coordinator, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), India, explained that the stakeholders’ concerns would carry more conviction in negotiations. It now depends on the government of India to pinpoint the specific legal clauses which might be difficult to implement.
