Aside from an analysis of the fishmeal and fish oil markets in the current difficult global market conditions, the presentation introduced IFFOs new Code of Responsible Practice program to be launched in the course of 2009. All of the brochures were made available to the participants and interesting comments were received. More than 200 people attended the conference, from the aquaculture field including fish nutritionists, but also academics and PhD students, government officials and agribusiness executives mainly from Asia.
Jean-Francois Mittaine and Wenpu Jin also had a series of meetings afterwards with key value chain players and government officials in Thailand to get a better understanding of the Thai fishmeal industry.
During the same week, Wenpu Jin also attended the Shrimp Aquaculture Dialogue meeting in Bangkok held by World Wildlife Fund (WWF), in which there is discussion on creating global standards for responsible shrimp farming. Wenpu Jin provided comments on the sustainability of the fishmeal and fish oil industry.
