New marine research vessel Thórunn Thórðardóttir HF-300 is finally about to arrive in Iceland after being handed over to the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute last week.
It’s three years since the contract for the build was signed between the Icelandic state and Astilleros Armón. Thórunn Thórðardóttir sailed earlier this week from Vigo for what is expected to be a five-day delivery trip, but with heavy weather on the way it’s not certain exactly when the new vessel will dock in Hafnarfjörður.
The Skipasýn-designed Thórunn Thórðardóttir replaces elderly research vessel Bjarni Sæmundsson, which was built in 1970 and has been sold to new owners in Norway.
The new vessel is named after pioneering marine scientist Þórunni Þórðardóttir (1925 – 2007), who specialised in the science of planktonic algae during a long career with the Institute.
