According to Icelandic Statistics, the number of fishing vessels had increased by 35 compared to the previous year.
At the end of the year 2012, the number of vessels including trawlers, fishing boats and small open fishing boats included, were 1,690 vessels registered in the Icelandic shipping register.
The Icelandic trawlers were from 2011 to 2012 reduced in number of 2 vessels, instead the number of smallere fishing boats in the same period increased to 14 vessels from the 764 recorded in 2011 to 778 vessels registered in 2012. Similarly, the number of open fishing boats increased by 23 boats to 856 boats in total.
The average age for all Icelandic vessels was about 24 years and five months in late 2012. The average age of the larger fishing boats was almost 23 years old, and for trawlers, the average age around 27 years and to open fishing boats was 26 years.
