As mussel cultivation is gaining momentum as a separate industry in Iceland more and more fishermen are opting for it. According to a committee just like in Canada mussel cultivation is becoming a competitive industry. The committee was established by Minister of Fisheries Einar K. Gudfinnsson to examine the feasibility of mussel cultivation.
In its report the committee has recommended that authorities help strengthening the industry and encouraging its growth. Gudfinnsson told that the committee’s conclusions are both moderate and realistic. He also added that the ministry will take the committee’s proposal under serious consideration. After this the next step is to further research the quality of mussels cultivated in Icelandic waters, such as establishing whether the level of cadmium is above the guideline limits of the European Union, opined the minister.
As the consumption of mussels is rising in Europe its price also surging. It is fact that mussel industry need big space and many European countries lack such spaces but Iceland has plenty of space so it goes for mussel cultivation even without having any experience in this industry.
